Tani Sushi Bistro in Clayton has been on my restaurant bucket list for a long time. With the closing of Miso in Clayton, I’d been extra keen to check it out. (You bet I just used the word keen.)
With Ken in town last weekend, I finally had an excuse to visit. The verdict? Delicious – on the pricey side, but very good and accommodating for GF. If you’re there on a date, try to make your reservation for the dining room, as the bar area is a little noisy. Be warned that the majority of their specialty rolls are not gluten-free, as many of them have tempura. If you’re dining with non GFers, though, they’ll be in hog heaven. You may have heard about the OMG roll — that’s the one that comes out set on fire. You’ll have to live a little less dangerously, possibly a spicy tuna roll. But hey, watching was [almost] as fun. Just tell yourself how many calories you’re saving from skipping the tempura, and treat yo’self to another glass of wine.
So let’s get down to business…what can you eat at Tani? Good news! Lots of things. We stuck to sushi, so I cannot speak to the full entree menu. However, most of their regular rolls can be prepared gluten-free. Just make sure you tell your server. Our server was knowledgeable about the gluten-free options on the menu, and if he didn’t know, he promptly asked the kitchen staff. Some of the specialty rolls can be prepared without sauces (most of which have gluten) or tempura shavings. If you’re dining with a non-GF partner, Tani is happy to bring the sauces out on the side. And of course, they have gluten-free soy sauce.
We ordered:
- Edamame to start (REALLY good…perfectly steamed and salted)
- The Sassy Roll (sauces on side)
- The Samba *formerly Erik Johnson* Roll (sauces on side)
- The Rainbow Roll
- The Spicy Tuna Roll
My recommend? The Samba Roll and the Rainbow Roll.
The Samba Roll was awesome and jampacked of sushi goodness – Tuna, Yellowtail, green onion, cucumber, avocado, cilantro, jalapeno, sesame seeds, orange tobiko and special sesame chili sauce. The sesame chili sauce was gluten-free, but of course always be sure to double-check with your server. I believe their tobiko (fish roe) is GF as I felt no effects, but make sure to confirm with your server.
The Rainbow Roll was delicious as well – California roll, five kinds of fish (chef’s choice), shrimp and avocado. How could you possibly wrap up more good things in one roll?
Consider Tani marked off the bucket list. *success*
Until next time,
Kate
